The first step in training your dog is to establish yourself as the alpha, or leader of the pack. Dogs are naturally social animals and in the wild, they live in packs led by a strong alpha male. In your home, you need to be the alpha. This doesn’t mean being aggressive or mean to your dog. It simply means being calm, confident and assertive. Your dog should see you as the leader and will naturally want to follow your lead.
The second step is to start teaching your dog basic obedience commands such as sit, stay, come, down and heel. These commands will help you to better control your dog and will make training easier and more fun.
The third step is to socialize your dog. This is important so that your dog knows how to behave around other people and animals. Socialization can be done by taking your dog to the park, on walks, to puppy class or even just having visitors over to your house.
The fourth step is to continue your dog’s training throughout his lifetime. Dogs are never too old to learn and it’s important to keep their minds active as they age. Training should be fun for both you and your dog and it’s a great way.
